Monkeypox
What It Is and How to Get Tested
Cases of monkeypox are increasing, creating the need for greater education and testing to contain the spread this contagious disease. Monkeypox is spread primarily through intimate contact and sex. Anyone is susceptible to infection, but cases are found primarily in gay and bisexual men, transgender individuals, and nonbinary people. Having anonymous sex or sexual contact with multiple partners increases your risk of being exposed to the monkeypox virus.

Transmission of Monkeypox
The current outbreak of monkeypox in the United States is being spread primarily through intimate contact like hugging, kissing, and cuddling. It is also spread through oral, vaginal, and anal sex. The monkeypox virus is transmitted through:
- Extended face-to-face contact.
- Direct contact with the sores or rash of an infected individual.
- Contact with the bedding, clothing, or other personal items of an individual infected with monkeypox.
Monkeypox can spread when infected people have active symptoms. Experts are doing further research to determine if the disease can also spread either before or after symptoms are present, along with which fluids contain and spread the virus.
